Indian IT Firms Increase Revenue Per Employee as AI Drives Productivity Gains

India's top IT firms are reporting more revenue per employee, reflecting a major paradigm shift in the growth model of the IT industry. Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HCLTech, and Tech Mahindra had growth of 3-4% in revenue per employee (RPE) during FY26, owing to better utilization of employees, automation using AI, and leaner operational structures.

What is Happening in the Indian IT Job Market in 2026?

According to the Economic Times, Tier-1 IT Firms have shed almost 7000 jobs in FY26, yet they have not compromised on boosting efficiency. In the past two years, average employee utilization rose from about 80% to nearly 85%, and bench strength reportedly fell to 8–15% from the previous level of nearly 20%.

This translates to more employees working billable jobs, thus allowing companies to generate revenue without proportional headcount growth.

The only major exception among top firms was Wipro, whose revenue per employee reportedly declined from approximately $45,040 in FY25 to $43,277 in FY26.

AI and Automation are Reshaping the IT Services Model

Rising revenues per employee correlate strongly with the adoption of AI tools and automation throughout the software development process, delivery operations, and internal workflows.

Indian IT companies are increasingly investing in:

  • AI-assisted coding tools
  • Workflow automation systems
  • AI agents for operational efficiency
  • Automated support and delivery processes

LTIMindtree, for instance, reportedly has over 1,500 AI agents working internally to boost productivity and operational efficiency.

The change is indicative of the structural transformation of the Indian IT sector. In the past, the expansion of IT services relied heavily on hiring new staff for the completion of projects. Today, businesses are trying to boost revenue with AI-powered productivity and optimal workforce utilization.

Revenue Growth is Decoupling from Workforce Growth

According to estimates from NASSCOM, India’s IT industry revenue could reach nearly $315 billion in FY26, while workforce growth is expected to remain limited at around 2.3%.

This indicates that revenue growth is increasingly getting “decoupled” from employee growth, one of the biggest changes currently reshaping the global IT services sector.

The industry is also gradually moving toward a more selective hiring structure:

  • Increased focus on high-skill specialized talent
  • Continued fresher hiring for scalable workforce pipelines
  • Reduced dependence on large mid-management workforce layers

Despite leaner workforce strategies, fresher hiring continues in several companies. LTIMindtree reportedly added more than 6,700 fresher employees in FY26, nearly a 40% rise in the number of new hires.

AI Impact on Workforce Growth in IT Sector

The future of recruitment and workforce planning in the IT industry looks set to change with the advent of AI-driven productivity improvements.

Key implications include:

  • Slower large-scale hiring cycles
  • Increased emphasis on skills that support AI readiness
  • Greater investment in reskilling initiatives
  • Greater focus on productivity and utilization indicators
  • Demand for specialized digital and AI talent has grown

The Indian IT sector appears to be moving from a size-based expansion approach to an efficiency-driven, automated, and intelligent delivery-focused one, as AI adoption grows.
